Many of the approximately 1 in 68 children who are ASD do not learn in the traditional auditory and visual manner\u00a0<\/span>which predominates in the general school curriculum and are, effectively, excluded from the learning process with adverse personal, family,\u00a0<\/span>school and community issues which can persist long aVer school leaving age without dedicated, specific and professional educational support\u00a0<\/span>for ASD students. Approximately 50% of ASD children, who can now be diagnosed at 2 years old, are of above average intelligence and only a\u00a0<\/span>small percentage fall below the average IQ. In an educational environment designed to help, they thrive and achieve their potential. Without,\u00a0<\/span>they struggle to learn and advance.<\/span><\/p>\n \n Monica WhiCaker is the mother of Jadhaan Keith WhiCaker a 17 year old Caymanian currently studying to be a Veterinary Technician\u00a0Assistant in Lancaster Beaumont College in the UK. Monica leV Cayman for the US when Jadhaan was 1 years old as there are no medical or\u00a0<\/span>schooling facilities\u00a0appropriate to his needs. In the right educational environment, Jadhaan has thrived and consistently achieves his potential.\u00a0He describes himself as an island boy and wants to return to Cayman to pursue his career.\u00a0<\/span>Lavinia Jones is the mother of 8 year old Raydon Northover, also diagnosed with ASD. For the last 1.5 years, Lavinia has joined with other\u00a0<\/span>family to provide professional home schooling for 3 children to enable them to fulfill their potential and who would otherwise struggle in the\u00a0<\/span>general school population. Lavinia and Raydon are relocating to the UK early in 2018 to access schooling appropriate for him and will likely be\u00a0<\/span>away from home unIl he has completed his tertiary education. Many families do not want to have to make such a move and many cannot\u00a0<\/span>afford so to do.<\/span><\/p>\n Lavinia has offered her 4,500 sq. V. home to Seed of Light as an inaugural SOL School for up to 30 local students. Legislation requires a raIo of\u00a01 teacher per 5 students for home schooling in Cayman. Professional help is being donated to assist in the building\u2019s conversion and other\u00a0<\/span>preparations and funding of US$1m is being sought to open and maintain the school for 10 years.<\/span><\/p>\n Seed of Life\u2019s full ambition is to establish, as a centre of excellence, a Regional primary to tertiary educational campus in Cayman to provide\u00a0for local and Caribbean Region children and students so that families can stay in the Caribbean and close to home ensuring no child is leV\u00a0<\/span>behind and has every chance to shine. Such a facility for 300 students is anticipated to require US$200m. However Phase 1 shall consist of\u00a0<\/span>modifying 1,500 sq. The newborn\u2019s medical condiIon caused choking during feeding sessions requiring 24 hours professional care and lifesaving reconstrucIve surgeries to facilitate feeding. However, due to medical and body weight requirements the iniIal reconstrucIve surgery was delayed for 1 year. Finally, remedial procedures commenced in the United States of America (USA) and each surgical treatment was supplemented with intense feeding and speech therapy.<\/p>\n As he developed regular assessments were executed confirming Jadhaan had speech, language, hearing and sensorial development delays. GeneIc TesIng confirmed he was born with deleIon of chromosome 22, causing cleV palate defect at birth.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_blurb][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″]<\/p>\n Jadhaan has undergone 13 surgeries and many years of therapy. Through these various methods of\u00a0intervention he is now 17 years old functioning academically at 13 years of age and continuously improving\u00a0<\/span>through vocational skills training. Jadhaan is a happy, loving and well-mannered young man striving to become\u00a0<\/span>an independent contributing\u00a0member of society. His love for animals has driven his career goal is to become a\u00a0Veterinarian Technician Assistant where he hopes to professionally contribute to their care & health needs.<\/span><\/p>\n Despite his medical, developmental and educaIonal challenges, effecIve September 2017, Jadhaan was\u00a0successfully accepted and enrolled at Beaumont College in Lancaster, UK. The total esImated cost for\u00a0<\/span>Jadhaan\u2019s special needs college education at Beaumont College is Three Hundred Thousand Pounds (\u00a3300,000). Jadhaan was awarded a grant from the Cayman Islands Government, which unfortunately was insufficient to cover the 1st <\/span>semester\u2019s tuition.<\/p>\n Jadhaan\u2019s special needs has resulted in his family being placed in extremely difficult financial positions however his mother, Monica WhiCaker who is also a single parent and a cancer survivor, tirelessly endures determined to help Jadhaan achieve his dream of graduating from college. Monica is currently seeking sponsorships and grants in the United Kingdom to assist with financing Jadhaan\u2019s college education. Jadhaan remains hopeful the financial needs of his college education will be met and his association with Seed of Life (SOL) Learning Institution will help to highlight the lack of proper educational resources for the various levels of Special Needs Students in the Cayman Islands. His\u00a0<\/span>parents immediately noIced some abnormalities\u00a0however doctors disagreed stating their concerns\u00a0were new parents jitters.<\/span><\/p>\n At 18 months Raydon, sIll unable to walk, was referred to Arnold Palmer & Miami Children\u2019s Hospitals where Neurologist, Neurosurgeons and Orthopedic Surgeon diagnosed him with Arnold – Chiari Malformation, Club Foot, and Abnormality of Gait. Through orthopedic care, bone manipulation and various Ankle Foot Orthosis, Raydon gained proper use of his feet.<\/p>\n At 3 years old Raydon was diagnosed with AuIsm Spectrum Disorder and Feeding Disorder. He was prescribed an intensive therapy program consisting of Speech, Occupation & ABA Therapies for the auIsm. His feeding difficulties were fundamentally sensory related could only be managed through trial and error.<\/p>\n As the necessary treatments for Raydon\u2019s development was sought in the Cayman Islands his parents discovered the Cayman Islands did not and sIll does not have laws protecting the educational requirements of Special Needs Individuals. Low budgets prohibit specialized schools, individually tailored curriculums, and effective Early Intervention Programs. High Functioning AuIsIc candidates are therefore leV to navigate through mainstream schools with high teacher to student ratios, an environment many are unable to funcIon and progress in. With sensory processing disorder, speech delay, eating disorder and ADD, Raydon was a Imid mouse in a busy classroom; rapidly obtaining below average grades academically and developmentally. His parents commenced private speech therapy and Raydon\u2019s monthly education cost escalated to US$2,000 per month.
